ANMAT Prohibits Sale of Illegal Surgical Instruments in Argentina

The National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT) has prohibited the use, commercialization, and distribution of shaver tips from the brands Smith & Nephew and Stryker, which were being marketed without documentation to prove their legitimacy and with an unknown origin.

This measure affects products detected during an inspection carried out at the Tecnoprot establishment, located at Garay 3360 in Mar del Plata, owned by Jorge Mauricio Duarte.

According to the Argentine News Agency, during the inspection, it was verified that the firm operated as a sales point for surgical articles and implants, where shaver tips – an instrument used in arthroscopic surgeries – were found alongside hip and knee prostheses and surgical cement, among other products.

Upon consulting with manufacturers Stryker Corporation and Smith & Nephew, both companies confirmed that the inspected products had not been entered into the country through their official channels, and therefore could not prove their legitimacy.

ANMAT also ordered the firm to cease the interjurisdictional transit of medical products until it obtains the corresponding authorization and initiated a health summary for alleged violations of Law 16.463.
